In Yuma, Arizona alone, 14 Iranian nationals have been caught trying to cross the U.S-Mexico border illegally since November. In the whole of FY 2020, 22 Iranians were caught across the entire US-Mexico border. This is a significant escalation of illegal Iranians attempting to enter the U.S. via Mexico.
And Yuma appears to be a priority crossing point. According to American Military News (AMN):
Yuma Sector Border Patrol agents had the most arrests of illegal crossers from Iran in the nation over the last two fiscal years, the release stated. In FY 2020, eight Iranian nationals were arrested by Yuma agents, with just 14 apprehended in all other border sectors combined.
Iran is labeled a “special interest” country by the U.S. Customs and Border Protection due to its designation as a state sponsor of terrorism.
This ramp-up in Iranian activity on the U.S. southern border is occurring just as President Joe Biden is rushing to stop building the border wall created by President Trump.
As one of his first acts as President, notes AMN, Joe Biden signed an Executive Order that ended Trump’s national emergency southern border declaration and canceled border wall funding, calling the project “not a serious policy solution.”
In that order, Biden said:
My Administration is committed to ensuring that the United States has a comprehensive and humane immigration system that operates consistently with our Nation’s values. In furtherance of that commitment, I have determined that the declaration of a national emergency at our southern border in Proclamation 9844 of February 15, 2019 (Declaring a National Emergency Concerning the Southern Border of the United States), was unwarranted. It shall be the policy of my Administration that no more American taxpayer dollars be diverted to construct a border wall. I am also directing a careful review of all resources appropriated or redirected to construct a southern border wall.
However, as the U.S. Customs and Border Patrol stated in their press release:
The primary mission of the Border Patrol is to prevent nefarious people and devices from entering the United States. Iran is a designated Special Interest Country and the agents of Yuma Sector work diligently to protect our borders for the safety of our nation,” the statement said. “Border security is national security.
How ending the construction of real border barriers and reducing the strong national focus on the border crisis by ending Trump’s national emergency declaration will help the CPB protect the border and national security, is hard to understand.
Sadly, due to Biden’s obsession with ‘open borders’ and reversing almost everything done by Trump, many more Iranians and nationals from other “special interest” countries will likely continue escalating their attempts to enter the U.S. along the southern border.
And now the Border Patrol will face the growing national security threat with reduced capabilities and resources.
