HOMELAND SECURITY – With control of Congress and the White House, Democrats continue to push a far-left agenda. The latest example, a radical gun control proposal that would criminalize the sale of over 200 widely owned firearms that the Democrats arbitrarily and misleadingly label as “assault weapons.” Something that literally does not exist except in their arbitrarily created terminology.
Some of the firearms listed in the proposed ban are “All AR types,” “All UZI types,” the Beretta CX4, Sig Sauer P556 pistol, as well as most modern shotguns and some hunting rifles.
This bill, which follows on two other gun control bills passed in the House, was introduced by the gun-hating Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-CA). It is called the “Assault Weapons Ban of 2021.”
Why are they “assault weapons?” Because Feinstein says so.
In a press release from Feinstein, the bill’s definition “bans any assault weapon with the capacity to utilize a magazine that is not a fixed ammunition magazine and has one or more military characteristics including a pistol grip, a forward grip, a barrel shroud, a threaded barrel or a folding or telescoping stock.”
The previous divisive and useless Democrat “assault weapons” ban passed in 1994 was sunset to end in 2004. And thankfully, it did. That ban required two or more of these arbitrary characteristics. Now only one is required. All of these characteristics can be found on a number of basic and sporting firearms not remotely military in any manner.
This nonsensical definition absurdly includes ALL semi-auto shotguns that have a detachable magazine, a fixed tube capable of holding more than 5 shells, or a revolving cylinder, and at least one “military feature” would be controlled by the legislation.
While existing gun owners would theoretically be exempt for now, according to this radical bill, an estimated 35 million guns already in circulation would be reclassified as “assault weapons” preparing the way for future identification and confiscation.
Meanwhile, Democrats apparently didn’t notice that in 2020, an estimated 8.4 million Americans became first-time gun owners – many for models that would come under the control of the Feinstein bill. Adding to Democrat tone-deafness on this critical 2nd Amendment issue, polls show that public support for more gun laws are at a multi-year low.
And Democrats also continue to ignore both facts and science about guns and violence.
The Department of Justice (DOJ) National Institute of Justice issued a report in 2004 stating that the “assault weapons” ban from 1994 did not actually reduce gun-related crime.
“We cannot clearly credit the ban with any of the nation’s recent drop in gun violence. And, indeed, there has been no discernible reduction in the lethality and injuriousness of gun violence,” the report stated.
The report noted that the “assault weapons” were “rarely used in gun crimes before the ban,” and that won’t be any different now. The DOJ Report continued by stating that: “Should it be renewed, the ban’s effects on gun violence are likely to be small at best and perhaps too small for reliable measurement.” ADN
