The threat of terrorist infiltration at the border is real and author Todd Bensman explains it – and how the U.S. government has been secretly combatting it- in riveting detail in his new book – America’s Covert Border War. As I have written several times, President Joe Biden’s self-created border crisis has exploded and continues to grow daily as he rapidly reverses former President Trump’s successful policies.
Over 100,000 illegal migrants were detained on the U.S.-Mexico border in February alone, the highest number in 15 years. And a small, but record number of Iranian nationals and other “special interest aliens” (SIAs), have been among those caught in recent months.
Yet, Biden refuses to call it a crisis or even visit the border.
Meanwhile, as I reported yesterday, the Mexican government claims that Biden’s immigration and border policies are creating big opportunities for organized crime and the drug cartels. Long ignored, or worse yet – denied – among all this is the very real threat of terrorist infiltration coming from South of the Border.
One person who hasn’t ignored this danger is investigative reporter, counterterrorism expert and author, Todd Bensman. His new book: America’s Covert Border War details the untold story of the secret American counterterrorism project built after 9/11 focused on countering terrorist infiltration of the United States. “Its surprising ongoing purpose: to prevent terrorist infiltration over the US southwest border.”
Bensman notes that “professional homeland security leadership under both Democrats and Republicans, with access to intelligence reporting most Americans don’t have, regarded the threat of terrorist infiltration as quite real.”
And Bensman should know. For nine years, through August 2018, Bensman led counterterrorism intelligence for the Texas Department of Public Safety’s Intelligence and Counterterrorism Division in its multi-agency fusion center. Before that, Bensman was a journalist for twenty-three years, covering national security after 9/11 as a staff writer for major newspapers and reporting in twenty-five countries.
His book is a treasure trove of intelligence, insights, and facts grounded in his homeland security experience and investigative reporter role. This is why it has been incredibly well received by numerous experts in the field of Jihadist terrorism:
“Bensman draws on his many years studying the U.S.-Mexican border to establish the presence of a major, but secret, national counterterrorism project; then to show the serious neglect that hobbles it; and finally, to recommend solutions. He needs urgently to be heeded, lest disaster come via the Rio Grande.” – Daniel Pipes, founder of The Middle East Forum, and author of sixteen books on Islam and the Middle East
“Drawing upon his unique experiences, both as a counterterrorism professional within the Texas Department of Public Safety, as well as his many years as an investigative journalist, Bensman utilizes a vast range of primary sources to provide an unmatched, richly detailed account of the vulnerabilities to terrorist infiltration that exist at the United States’ southern border, writes Sam Mullins, author of “Jihadist Infiltration of Migrant Flows to Europe: Perpetrators, Modus Operandi and Policy Implications”
“Todd Bensman provides a deeply disturbing national security perspective to failed immigration controls from Panama through Mexico to the southern borders of Mexico to which we were blind. Bensman now examines the threat of lone jihadists and organized groups moving through those countries to the United States.” – Dr. Michael Lauderdale, University of Texas at Austin, Clara Pope Willoughby Centennial Professor.
I hope to write more about this topic, and Bensman’s book in coming weeks, but America’s Covert Border War is a MUST read for all national security experts, counterterrorism analysts, doubting politicians, and concerned Americans.
