FOR YOUR EYES ONLY – With the many national security and intelligence topics that American Defense News (ADN) cannot adequately cover every day – in collaboration with the Center for American Defense Studies (CADS) – we are providing our readers a PDB:
Not the President’s Daily Brief, but almost as good – Paul’s Daily Briefing.
Today’s PDB includes a variety of critical issues such as – Space Force wants to use directed-energy systems for space superiority. Top U.S. admiral bristles at criticism of ‘woke’ military: ‘We are not weak.’
Inside Iran’s shadow war for the Middle East.
GOP rep: If Biden doesn’t evacuate Afghan interpreters, ‘blood will be on his hands.
Regular troops begin Special Forces-style security missions across Indo-Pacific.
At the limits of what I can do:’ Marine Corps commandant makes plea for funding.
Pentagon ‘Woke Watch’
Top U.S. admiral bristles at criticism of ‘woke’ military: ‘We are not weak.’ Adm. Michael Gilday, chief of Naval Operations, rebuffed pointed interrogations by GOP lawmakers Tuesday who grilled him over his decision to recommend sailors read a book deemed by some conservatives as anti-American.
CNO Gilday: Flat or Declining Navy Budgets ‘Will Definitely Shrink’ the Fleet. The number of ships in the fleet, now at 296 ships, will decrease if the Navy continues to have flat or declining budgets, the service’s top officer warned.
At the limits of what I can do:’ Marine Corps commandant makes plea for funding. Arguing for full funding of the Marine Corps’ fiscal 2022 budget request, Commandant Gen. David Berger said his service has shed all waste and needs support to focus on potential adversaries like China and Russia.
Air Force Chief Brown: DoD needs up to 5% more money, plus aircraft cuts, to compete with China. Even with a 3 percent to 5 percent increase in the defense budget, losing a conflict with China still becomes a “distinct possibility” without both aircraft cuts and a fundamental change in how the Air Force structures itself for war, Chief of Staff Gen. Charles Q. Brown Jr. warned lawmakers.
Deep cuts loom for National Guard if Capitol security mission is not reimbursed, report says. The National Guard could be forced to ground aircraft and make deep cutbacks to training and maintenance if it is not reimbursed by August for its mission in Washington, D.C., after the breach of the Capitol in January, an advocacy group said Wednesday.
China sends largest group of military aircraft in single day near Taiwan. China has sent its largest-ever number of military aircraft in a single day into the international airspace surrounding Taiwan, with the island nation scrambling its fighter jets and deploying air defense missile systems in response.
Why Chinese military’s latest Taiwan sortie suggests PLA is expanding scope of combat training. The PLA’s largest sortie into Taiwan’s air defence identification zone marked another step forward by the Chinese military because it was the first of its kind on the eastern side of the island, according to military analysts.
Russia conducts what it calls its largest naval exercise in the Pacific since Cold War. The Russian Navy is conducting what Russian officials call its largest exercise in the Pacific Ocean since the end of the Cold War. The exercise, about 300-500 miles west of Hawaii, comes just ahead of the meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and U.S. President Joe Biden.
Russia’s newest submarines are “on par with ours” according to senior American general. A senior U.S. military officer has again sounded the alarm about the threat that advanced, very quiet, cruise-missile-armed Russian submarines, as well as Chinese ones, increasingly present threat to US Navy.
Inside Iran’s shadow war for the Middle East. Iran and the US are fighting a shadow war for influence in the Middle East, and it’s a war that Iran seems to be winning.
GOP rep: If Biden doesn’t evacuate Afghan interpreters, ‘blood will be on his hands. Republican congressman and former Green Beret implored President Biden on Wednesday to immediately order the evacuation of Afghans who helped U.S. troops, saying “blood will be on his hands” if he does not.
Regular troops begin Special Forces-style security missions across Indo-Pacific. Small teams of soldiers have been deploying across the Indo-Pacific this year on missions akin to those performed by the Green Berets.
Space Force wants to use directed-energy systems for space superiority. The head of the Space Force acknowledged that the U.S. is developing the “appropriate” directed-energy systems to maintain American space superiority, although he declined to provide details in the unclassified setting of a June 16 congressional hearing.
