Opinion – On this Independence Day weekend, while many patriotic Americans celebrate the founding of the greatest democratic experiment in modern history, many others are loudly screaming that the 4th of July doesn’t represent them. For all those who naively believe that Critical Race Theory (CRT) or the New York Times’ ‘1619 Project,’ or the BLM movement and the entire ‘anti-racism’ agenda is just about talking or teaching about racism in America, or about police abuse – reality check.
No, it absolutely, positively, is not.
It is instead, all about undermining the entire structure America has been built on by labeling it all as fundamentally – or ‘systemically’ – racist and therefore needing to be torn down – in its entirety.
This is why they protest the national anthem and the American flag – and now – yes, the 4th of July.
As James J. Carafano, the vice president of Heritage’s Kathryn and Shelby Cullom Davis Institute for National Security and Foreign Policy, notes in 19fortyfive.com, that is why:
… July 4th and other patriotic holidays are on the purge list. The radical agenda to reimagine civic memory would reconceptualize Independence Day as an event not worth celebrating or, even “better,” a day to protest against what is wrong with America.
Carafano adds:
One of the most prominent controversies in the culture wars swirls around curriculum that would implement concepts introduced by Critical Race Theory, the 1619 Project and anti-racist doctrine. These beliefs insist that our nation’s civic structures are inherently oppressive, biased, and racist. Historical persons and events become fodder for this fight because historical memories are the billboards of these racist structures. They must be torn down.
…If this agenda wins out, the rising generation of Americans will grow up unable to describe what happened on Independence Day, much less its critical importance to the worldwide advance of human rights and liberty. They will know it only as an important occasion for criticizing and denigrating the idea of America.
…make no mistake; there is no honor in what the would-be re-interpreters of America’s holidays have in store for America. Their agenda is not about education. It is about indoctrination—indoctrination that would overturn how America is governed.
Critical Race Theory as civics education offers, perhaps, the starkest example of a radical political agenda hiding under the guise of objective inquiry in search of a just society. This method of query is rooted in Marxist ideology…
The primary purpose of all the neo-Marxist ‘Critical Theories’ was never about education but about creating ‘critical’ instruments to criticize and undermine the moral and political legitimacy of American democratic and capitalist society to justify replacing it with new political orders based on Marxist thought.
This is why Americans who believe that while the country is imperfect it is still worthy of honoring and defending, must fight to preserve what generations of Americans fought and died for – not just our structures and institutions, but our history and holidays.
As Carafano writes: “…Independence Day should be marked to affirm the importance of political freedoms and recognize the importance of fighting to secure and protect them.”

I can say one thing for sure: There were LOTS of celebratory fireworks last night in this part of Northern VA, to conteract that radical movement, not just public sponsored fireworks, but also, at least hundreds of private, individual ones. If you are unable to send your child to a private or Catholic school, and you disagree with your child’s public school’s curriculum — gather as many parents who feel as you do and go to both the school Principal and the District School Board and tell them you want a better curriculum including American History/Govt! If they refuse to change the curriculum, threaten you WILL REMOVE YOUR CHILD FROM THEIR SCHOOL!
THOSE are the words no Principal wants to hear because public schools are given $$ according to how many students are enrolled. If they lose a bunch of students, that amount reduces greatly!! As an ex-teacher, I watched one Italian Mother come to our High School and not only change which teacher her young teen had, but also change part of the curriculum— all by herself! She wasn’t going to take “No” that day from anyone running the school! THAT IS THE EXACT ATTITUDE YOU MUST HAVE WHEN APPROACHING A SCHOOL PRINCIPAL OR SCHOOL DISTRICT! And it fails to recognize that the United States did not exist during the century and a half following 1619. It fails to celebrate attempts to abolish colonization and create a new nation.
It fails to celebrate the War of 1812-15 that finally ended King George’s domination. It failed to celebrate the following 45 years of improved freedoms and prosperity. And it besmirched the results of the Civil War in which hundreds of thousands of Americans died to end slavery once and for all. Historians move slowly but I believe eventually, they’ll make this awful thing a footnote to real facts of that era.
At the start of a recent conversation, I was asked “When has America ever been great?” I asked if he would like a list. He turned around and walked away. I would like to have asked him if there was anything, family, friend or cause that he would take a bullet for. Then I would have reminded him of how many have died for his inalienable right to be a jackass. Next, I would ask him what continent, country, or city (or century) he would prefer to live in. I would offer to buy him a first-class ticket. The only condition would be that he renounce his American citizenship. It could have been a very interesting conversation.
