Biden’s Afghan Disaster
Biden’s ugly defense of his Afghan failure. His lie-loaded speech caps off a debacle that could sink his party in 2022 and 2024.
Here are the problems with Biden’s defense of America’s chaotic withdrawal from Afghanistan. The world has been transfixed by the scenes of horror in Kabul since the city fell to the Taliban as legions of Americans and Afghans have struggled to escape the country, but President Joe Biden is arguing that the evacuation would still have been chaotic if it had started much earlier.
‘Everybody screwed up’: Blame game begins over turbulent U.S. exit from Afghanistan. A week into the evacuation from Kabul, the U.S. military was forced to take a drastic step: stop all flights from Hamid Karzai International Airport for seven hours because there was nowhere for the evacuees to go.
‘My heart just breaks thinking of their pain,’ says Gold Star wife. When Heather Gray Blalock learned Thursday of the suicide bombing attacks outside the Kabul airport in Afghanistan that killed 13 U.S. service members, “it brought on a fresh grief wave. … Far too close to home.”
US, Taliban cooperation ‘possible’ after war’s end, joint chiefs chairman says. The U.S. and Taliban potentially could coordinate in the future against an offshoot of the Islamic State group in Afghanistan responsible for a suicide bombing that killed 13 troops last month, Gen. Mark Milley, the Joint Chiefs chairman, said Wednesday at the Pentagon.
With Afghan retreat, Biden bucks foreign policy elite. The president, following one of his core beliefs, has put himself at odds with much of the establishment, on the right and left, in Washington and across Europe.
White House downplays ‘leaked transcripts of phone calls’ between Biden and Ghani. The White House refused to draw further attention to reports President Joe Biden and ousted Afghan President Ashraf Ghani were unprepared for Afghanistan’s quick collapse and that Biden had encouraged his counterpart in Kabul, Afghanistan, to fix his “perception” problem by selling a military strategy with local political heavyweights.
Majority of interpreters, other U.S. visa applicants were left behind in Afghanistan. U.S. still doesn’t have reliable data on who was evacuated from Afghanistan, a senior State Department official says.
Pentagon chief says visa program not designed to accommodate Afghan evacuation. The Pentagon chief on Wednesday said that the special immigrant visa program that provides a path to safety for interpreters and other people who assist the U.S. military in war zones “perhaps should be looked at going forward,” citing the long process involved in clearing them to come to the United States.
Generous Americans ‘clogging’ military mail network with donations for Afghan evacuees at Al Udeid. Donate elsewhere to help other Afghan evacuees, as this base has plenty.
Defense spending increase, Afghanistan withdrawal dominate debate over defense policy measure. In a bipartisan vote Thursday, a key House panel approved plans to boost defense spending by nearly $24 billion above White House plans for fiscal 2022, setting up a showdown later this year between leftist Democrats and moderates in the party over how much defense funding is too much.
The dawn of America’s latest (‘forever’?) conflict: the over-the-horizon war of 2021. Ending a “forever war?” Forget it. It seems we are now embarking upon a new conflict, and one that—even if successful—will be difficult, long, and costly: the Over-the-Horizon (OTH) War of 2021.
U.S. spies didn’t cause Kabul to fall. The Biden administration apparently wants to make a scapegoat out of the intelligence community.
The Army wants you to get smart on China’s military structure and tactics. The Army released a brand-new comprehensive — and unclassified — assessment of China’s military strategy, structure, capabilities and tactics in early August.
U.S. Marine F-35Bs to operate off largest Japanese warship later this year. U.S. Marine F-35B Lighting II Joint Strike Fighters will operate off a Japanese warship later this year, Marine Corps Commandant Gen. David Berger said on Wednesday.
Unvaccinated active-duty sailors and Marines have 90 days to get the COVID-19 vaccine. This week’s guidance follows a memo mandating vaccines that was signed Aug. 24 by Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin.
Navy unveils series of uniform updates on hairstyle, earrings, high heels and smartwatches. The Navy has unveiled a wave of uniform and grooming updates — including multiple hairstyle updates for men and women, and guidance regarding earrings, high heels and smartwatches.
