ANALYSIS – Over the past month I have been involved in a major effort to save Americans and vetted, at-risk Afghans left behind in Afghanistan. Our private, volunteer group, ‘PLAN B’ – the Afghan Rescue Crew (ARC) – only one of many groups, has had many successes, especially in the earlier part of the effort.
This is a continuation from Part 1.
NR adds that:
ARC is attempting to simultaneously evacuate several different groups. Some Afghans are not necessarily high-value targets, but are members of religious groups, including Christians, who expect to be oppressed and abused with the Taliban back in power.
Then there are interpreters and other Afghans who worked with U.S. and coalition forces, who don’t know if they’re on the Taliban’s target list but suspect that they will be targeted by retribution. And then there are what Thrower calls “super high-value targets,” who know for certain that they’re on the Taliban’s list for violent retribution. “In many cases, they’ve been called or texted by the Taliban with threats. They’re moving from place to place. Many of them are members of the Afghan government.”
But Thrower also notes that the ARC has hundreds of American citizens and Green Card holders desperately trying to escape, even as Team Biden insists less than 100 remain behind.
The problem is many won’t leave without their immediate family members who may not have U.S. passports, or any passport at all. This being the most recent “Taliban” requirement.
Beyond that NR notes, “Thrower fumes about the U.S. State Department’s refusal to extricate people quickly for fear that some terrorists may be hiding among them. She says her organization has 2,500 to 3,000 people that are completely vetted, including former U.S. military interpreters, officials in the Afghan government, and diplomats.”
I would vouch for that, as I personally vetted hundreds myself, and hundreds more were vetted by ex U.S. military officers and other U.S., or allied agencies.
From what I observed over these past several weeks, potentially thousands of unvetted Afghans were flown out of the country on U.S. military or other flights in the early chaos, while many vetted, deserving people in groups like ours, were left behind or blocked from leaving.
And the danger to these deserving at-risk people left behind is increasing daily. Our team has “people who are going missing and getting killed every day.” We hear accounts from Afghans who made it out, as well as the horrifying stories of those left behind.
As Thrower said, PLAN B- the ARC is more than willing to work with the administration in any good faith effort to save lives. But “Let’s just get somebody out!” ADN
