KYIV, Ukraine—Russia sent reinforcements to Severodonetsk, the site of fierce street fighting in recent days, as it pushed to capture the remainder of the strategically important city, Ukrainian officials said Saturday.
Russian forces stormed into Severodonetsk a week ago as part of a broader effort to control the eastern Donbas region, the focus of Moscow’s efforts after withdrawing troops from around the capital, Kyiv, and northern Ukraine in March.
Ukrainian forces have struggled to hold off Russian advances, which are backed by heavy artillery in the east, but are mounting resistance in Severodonetsk.
The General Staff of Ukraine’s Armed Forces said Russian units in Severodonetsk had been reinforced by the mobilization of further troops.
