Christopher Borders, Winston Durham is also part of the WSU ROTC program. Borders says Durham joined the Guard in 2019.

CHINA THREAT

BIDEN’S DANGEROUS FAILURE ON CHINA – What it looks like when competing with China comes last. Today, the Biden team’s plans for maintaining stability in the Indo-Pacific are inconsistent. The Biden administration does not want to build an “Asian NATO” or an anti-hegemonic coalition, but neither does the administration intend to rapidly arm Taiwan, allowing it to serve as its own credible threat against Chinese aggression.

Marine Pacific commander vows to bolster Japanese defenses against China, Russia. The U.S. Marine presence is focused on the so-called first island chain in the western Pacific.

China says it tested missile-interception system. China has carried out a land-based missile interception test that “achieved its expected purpose,” the Defense Ministry said, describing it as defensive and not aimed at any country.

RUSSIA THREAT

Russia-Ukraine war: List of key events, day 117. Russia advances as its forces seize a village near Ukraine’s industrial city of Severodonetsk, a prime target in Moscow’s campaign to control Ukraine’s east, Russian state news agency TASS said. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy says he expects Russia to intensify attacks on Ukraine as Kyiv waits for the European Union’s decision to grant it candidacy status.

Russian boat reportedly sunk while bringing supplies to Black Sea island made famous by Ukrainian guards. A Russian military tugboat carrying a surface-to-air missile launcher to Snake Island in the Black Sea sank after two Ukrainian missiles struck it, Kyiv announced Friday.

Russia condemns Lithuania transit ban to Kaliningrad, vows response. The Kremlin on Monday called Lithuania’s decision to ban the transit of some goods to Russia’s Kaliningrad region “unprecedented” and vowed to respond.

Russian TV shows videos of 2 US vets captured in Ukraine. There has been no official confirmation from the U.S. or Russian government that the Americans were being held.

AFRICA IN CRISIS

ISIL-affiliate gains ground in the Sahel as massacres mount. ISIL-affiliated fighters, whose power was once thought to be waning in the Sahel, have expanded their reach recently, marking their presence with an unprecedented series of attacks on civilians.

DR Congo welcomes deployment of regional force to fight rebels. The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has welcomed Kenya’s proposal to deploy a regional force to fight the M23 rebel group in the east of the country but said it won’t accept neighbor Rwanda’s participation.

US MILITARY AND SPACE

WTF NAVY? The Navy is firing a lot of officers and saying almost nothing about it. Since May 31, six commanding officers and one command master chief have lost their jobs.

America’s shame: About 14 percent of military families are food insecure. American service members and their families are going hungry, and Congress needs to fix this.

BIDEN’S FAULT – Inflation is crushing already struggling US troops and their families. Groceries are more expensive and gas prices are sky high. The junior enlisted could use a pay raise right about now.

SHOULD DOD HELP TROOPS KILL THEIR UNBORN BABIES? – House Democrat lawmakers demand standardized leave policies, financial support for service members seeking abortions. House lawmakers urged Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin on Friday to expand abortion access for service members and their families as the Supreme Court looks to overturn a landmark law preventing states from outlawing the procedure.

SHOULD DOD PROVIDE ELECTIVE GENDER TRANSITION SURGERIES? – Transgender veterans still waiting on VA’s promise of surgery options. One year after Veterans Affairs officials announced they would take steps to provide gender confirmation surgeries for transgender veterans, no procedures have been completed and none are likely to be scheduled for months to come.
