WWII Soldier’s Remains FINALLY Identified – After Fighting In Germany

The remains of an unrecovered American soldier in WWII will finally be laid to rest in San Diego, California after Decades of being lost. Army tech Sgt. Matthew L. McKeon was assigned to the Company K, 3rd Battalion, 12th Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Division in November of 1944. On the unfaithful day McKeon’s unit was fighting German forces near Hürtgen, Germany in Hürtgen Forest when he was killed and not recovered. Now nearly 80 years later using scientific technology McKeon has been discovered.

According to the ArmyTimes,

The American Graves Registration Command, tasked with investigating and recovering missing American service members in Europe, was unable to identify McKeon’s remains, despite several investigations in the Hürtgen area for several years after the war’s end.

An historian determined that a set of unidentified remains which had been recovered near Hürtgen and buried at Ardennes American Cemetery in 1950 could belong to a service member missing from combat in November 1944. The remains were disinterred in June 2021 and sent to the DPAA laboratory at Offutt Air Force Base. Scientists identified McKeon’s remains using dental and anthropological analysis, as well as DNA analysis.

His remains will be sent to San Diego where he is set to be buried and laid to rest, assumably by his family, after all of these years. This discovery was made on January 12, 2023, but released in a statement by the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency on March 16th. A rosette is also set to be placed on his name at the Walls of Missing at the Netherlands American Cemetery.
